TOM WELBERS LIKES:
"WUN'ERFUL, WUN'ERFUL!
Stan Freberg Comedy"
"Does anybody remember Stan Freberg?
Back in the '50s I grew up listening to his routines.
Especially because my mom was annoyingly
obsessed with Lawrence Welk and his Champagne
Music, Stan's "Wun'erful, Wun'erful" was my
favorite childhood way of tormenting her.
And then (with present-day help of YouTube), his
other great routines flood into my mind: " The
Lone Psychiatrist ," " John and Marsha ," " Banana
Boat ," " Elderly Man River ," and, my all-time
favorite, his commercial on the " Power of Radio ."
Oh, and don't forget the perennially meaningful,
" Green Chri$tma$." Not to mention " Beanie and
Cecil ." And on . . .
If you don't know who (or what) I'm talking about,
you're probably under 50. Ask your grandfather.
Stan Freberg, still very much alive and active at
age 88, will be here at Good Shepherd on Sunday
evening, December 7, at 7 pm. We are welcoming
him and his wife, Hunter, for a celebration of his
70 years of creative entertainment recalling both
the past and present of their life and faith. There
will be no admission charge, but we do ask a $10
donation if you can pay it. It will be a marvelous
show to recall wonderful old memories and their
present journey. We'll have a reception afterwards
and a book/record signing. (He'll also sign any
mementoes you'd like to bring.)
Invite your friends too. Anyone who remembers
(or has heard him on old records and videos) will
not want to miss this ..."
